HoloMem secures Innovate UK Smart Grant to develop low energy holographic data storage solution.

HoloMem the UK-based SME pioneering low energy holographic data storage (HDS), has today announced it has been awarded a £350,000 Smart Grant from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency. The grant will enable HoloMem to expedite the technical development of its high density and low energy HDS solution to meet the needs of the exponentially growing archival data storage industry.

HoloMem’s innovative technology addresses several challenges within the global data storage market. Notably, HoloMem’s high density data storage solution requires no active cooling in operation, allowing for increased capacity whilst reducing power consumption and drastically cutting CO2 emissions.

“Data storage currently represents 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, and by 2030 it’s predicted that roughly 8% of all energy will be needed to power the data centres that keep today’s digital world running. That’s equivalent to about 33.8m tons of oil. We knew that something needed to be done to mitigate this prediction,” said Charlie Gale, CEO of HoloMem. “With Innovate UK’s support we will be able to take the next steps in developing a game changing solution that will put data storage on the front foot when it comes to protecting the environment in the long term whilst still keeping our data secure and accessible.”
