Embedded Engineer

Full-time position.

Onsite 5 days a week - Chiswick, London.

Design the Future of Sustainable Storage

HoloMem is redefining how the world stores data by building a future fit cold data storage solution. Our pioneering holographic storage technology encodes data as light within advanced materials, creating an energy efficient and highly resilient alternative to today’s fragile and energy intensive cloud storage infrastructure.

Founded by ex-Dyson innovation engineers and fuelled by two Innovate UK Smart Grants, we are now on a mission to deploy our HoloDrive technology to the market. To help deliver our groundbreaking technology, we are hiring an Advanced Embedded Engineer to further the design and integration of precision electromechanical systems at the heart of our system.

What You’ll Be Doing

This is not about integrating off-the-shelf components or following conventional design cycles. At HoloMem, you’ll own the design and build bespoke internal systems that complement our novel optical and holographical technology. You’ll move fluidly between coding software and the lab, collaborating closely with physicists, materials scientists, and engineers to prototype and iterate at speed. Your role is to help HoloMem deliver disruptive technology products.

The Specifics

The role is for an Advanced Embedded Engineer to collaborate with our in-house experts to drive innovations throughout our system. You will -

  • Design and develop precision electronic and electromechanical systems for repeatable and accurate control

  • Own the integration of rigs and prototypes as the complexity of our systems continues to rise

  • Diagnose and debug electromechanical and control system challenges

  • Push the capabilities of our holographic data storage technology by delivering innovative solutions to challenging problems

  • Work hands-on in our Chiswick lab - designing, building, testing, and refining

Who You Are

We’re looking for a pragmatic and creative embedded engineer who cares about technological advancement acting as the glue between engineering and science. You’ll bring a strong electronics and software foundation, with the range and curiosity to work across disciplines and solve real-world scientific problems.

Required Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in electronics, embedded systems or mechatronics, ideally within a multidisciplinary R&D function

  • A master’s degree in a related discipline (excellent bachelors results will also be considered)

  • Demonstrable understanding of C/CPP within a commercial environment

  • Hands-on experience with common microcontrollers E.g. ESP32, STM32, Teensy, Pi

  • Concrete understanding of precision motor & encoder interfacing

  • A working knowledge of Linux fundamentals (particularly debian based distributions)

  • Strong experience with one or more electronics design packages E.g. EasyEDA, KiCAD, Altium

  • Experience with debugging hardware and embedded software, with particular emphasis on high performance digital signal processing.

  • Demonstrable understanding of common communication protocols E.g. I2C, SPI, UART

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic startup environment

Desirable Skills

  • Exposure to FPGA design and integration

  • Familiarity with PCIE, SAS and other high speed serial interfaces

  • Exposure to high level languages such as Python

  • Experience in optics, photonics, or precision instrumentation

Benefits At HoloMem

  • Competitive salary

  • 25 days annual leave

  • Employer pension contributions

  • Cycle-to-work scheme
